About Delta Omicron and Gamma Mu

Delta Omicron was founded on September 6, 1909 at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music by three freshmen, Hazel Wilson Bowsman, Lorena Creamer McClure, and Mabel Dunn Hopkins. Delta Omicron is the only professional music fraternity founded by underclassmen and, therefore, never denies freshmen from joining the organization.

Delta Omicron is a co-ed fraternity that encourages the development of fellowship, character, and the appreciation of good music and performance.  Members aspire to attain the highest level of musicianship possible.  The organization also gives material aid to deserving students.

Delta Omicron was founded to create and foster fellowship, to develop character, and to arouse and encourage the appreciation of good music and performance among musicians during their student days so that the highest degree of musicianship might be attained individually.

The Gamma Mu chapter of Delta Omicron was founded at Virginia Tech on December 3, 1989.  Our founding members who received the charter were Jeanne Elaine Backofen, Donna Michelle Hinn, Mara Gretchen Hohls, Mary Jess Pruett, Susan Marie Reynolds, Becky Jean Riebeling, Elizabeth Ann Rose, Aaron Francis Snyder, Susanne Mae Weeks, and Melanie Ann Wyatt.

Gamma Mu is located in the Zeta South province along with the Alpha Gamma chapter at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN.

Gamma Mu helps the Virginia Tech Department of Music and the New River Valley area with various service and fundraising projects.  The chapter also participates in many social activities.  To see a list of activities that Gamma Mu participates in, both service and social, please visit the “Activities” link at the top of the screen.
